About this pile of jokes
Online since November 4, 1997
This site started in 1997 as a single page of yo mama jokes typed up by hand and hosted on a dial-up account. People emailed in jokes. Some were funny. Those went up. That has been the editorial process for nearly thirty years and it has not needed improving.
What changed in this version
The site ran on WordPress for about a decade, which meant slow pages, a theme nobody maintained anymore, and every category chopped into pages of ten jokes. This version is plain static HTML: no database, no plugins, nothing to update at 2am because a plugin got exploited.
- Every category lives on one page. Filter as you type instead of clicking Next Page nine times.
- Tap any joke to copy it. That is what everybody was doing manually anyway.
- The Roast Machine on the front page pulls a random joke from the whole collection.
- Loads in about a second on a phone on bad reception.
Still being moved over from the old site: Yo Mama Like A, Yo Daddy. They'll be back shortly.
Where the jokes come from
Yo mama jokes are folk humour. They come out of the dozens, a call-and-response insult tradition with roots going back generations, and nobody owns them any more than anybody owns knock-knock jokes. Ours were emailed in, overheard, remembered from school, and in a few cases argued about at length. If you think one is misattributed or you want yours taken down, email us and we'll sort it out.
What we don't publish
The line has moved since 1997, and we moved with it. We don't run jokes built on race or ethnicity, slurs of any kind, or anything aimed at a real named person. Two categories that were on the old site for years came down in this rebuild for exactly that reason.
What's left is what the format was always best at: absurd exaggeration. Nobody's mother has a waist size measured in equators.
